Moon Boy

Moon Boy is the court jester and fool of King Robert Baratheon's court in King's Landing. He is described as a pie-faced simpleton who performs on stilts, wearing motley, and whose mockery of everyone, including the High Septon, provokes laughter even from the stern Septa Mordane. His deft cruelty suggests he may not be as simple as he appears.

Role at the Feast

At the feast following the first day of the Hand's tourney, Moon Boy dances about on stilts, making mock of everyone with such deft cruelty that Sansa Stark wonders if he is simple after all. Even Septa Mordane is helpless before him; when he sings his little song about the High Septon, she laughs so hard she spills wine on herself.

Narrative Significance

Moon Boy serves as a figure of licensed mockery within the court, a traditional fool whose apparent simplicity allows him to speak truths that others cannot. His presence at the feast underscores the contrast between the festive atmosphere and the underlying tensions that will soon erupt into open conflict.
